I'm a new postdoc at BNL who wants easy access to the city.
Here is the Vision:
We rent a 4 bedroom house or large apartment in Forest Hills NY and pack 3 BNL postdocs into it. The one remaining bedroom is used for guests and/or storage. The house in Forest Hills allows us to access the Manhattan subway system (1 block from our postdoc house) and we carpool together to work -- the driver drives and the passengers can log some work hours during the commute. Commute time from Forest Hills would be one hour. This gives us world class science at Brookhaven and world class socializing and culture in Manhattan.

| Here's a different idea. Three postdocs could share a BNL apartment on campus for weekday nights, so the cost per person is $500. Then we could drive/train into BNL Monday mornings, stay a few nights and work, then commute back to separate homes (in Brooklyn or Queens or Montauk or anywhere you think is cool for yourself) on Thursday night or Friday night. |

| Here is how I resolved this: I rented one place in Ridge, NY and one place in Brooklyn near the LIRR station. Monday nights through Wednesday nights I sleep near BNL in Ridge, and the rest of the nights I crash in Brooklyn and have fun in the city. I only commute Monday mornings and Thursday evenings. The LIRR can take me back and forth from Brooklyn to BNL, on Monday mornings and Thursday evenings. This allows me to work at BNL and get the city life too, and I'm a happy scientist. |
